A top-tier, liberal arts university and a research institution, a beautiful, scenic, hillside campus with tons of science resources, Colgate University offers great interaction between students and faculty and plenty of study-abroad opportunities. Colgate’s 13 founders started the institution with 13 dollars in 1817. The University’s name changed from Madison to Colgate in 1890 with generous, philanthropic gifts received from the Colgate family over decades. Number 13 is significant to the university so every Friday the 13th is called Colgate Day where students display their school spirit in various ways.
Admissions-The University is test-optional till 2027. Early Decision 1 and 2, Early Action and Regular Decision plans are offered. Demonstrated interest is not factored in. Only need-based aid is offered. Colgate University is need-aware. Colgate does not award merit scholarships, but about 200 athletic scholarships are available in 13 sports.
Majors-The university’s Liberal Arts Core Curriculum encourages students to explore various fields and disciplines. The University offers 56 majors. Colgate’s strongest programs are Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Environmental Studies, Economics, Political Science, English, Psychology and Computer Science and Neuroscience. 80% of Colgate students do research. Interdisciplinary study is encouraged.
Students: Colgate students are peppy, sporty, active, confident and collaborative. Greek life is prevalent on campus. A lot of New Yorkers attend the university. The international student population is approximately 9%.
The Colgate Raiders participate in NCAA Division I athletics. The university offers over 50 club and intramural sports programs, a variety of fitness facilities, and numerous outdoor activities.
